A Brief History

In 2019, Northfield Promise convened an intentionally small racial equity action team to secure buy-in from local partners during the 2019-20 school year. The goal was to streamline individual groups’ racial and equity efforts into a united coalition in order to maximize effectiveness. The team was composed of four high school students, the superintendent, select city and county representatives, an elementary school principal, and the head of the teacher’s association. In 2020-21, the group scaled up its efforts and engaged more than 30 leaders from the community’s major institutions, along with Latine community members, community organizers, and young people. In February 2021, the group became known as the NREEC.

The founding partners of the NREEC are Northfield Public Schools, City of Northfield, and Healthy Community Initiative.
